Today Foursquare announced a cool mapping feature that visualizes its users’ last 500,000,000 check-ins. Click on the interactive map to discover check-ins anywhere in the world. What’s the point? The Foursquare powers-that-be say recommendations will be more personalized than ever. For example, if locals frequent a certain watering hole (and check in on Foursquare) after going to the big game (where they already checked in), Foursquare will identify a correlation between the two places. So when you’re new to the neighborhood and decide to go to the sports arena, Foursquare will suggest a visit to that hoppin’ bar afterward for a round of margaritas. Taking into account check-ins from you, your friends, and users with similar tastes, Foursquare can also offer more tailored recommendations whenever you travel to a different city.
Those points are also an amazing visualization of the ever-expanding, ever-improving database of tens of millions of places that powers Foursquare Explore. It illustrates why, when you open up the app, no matter where you are in the world, you can discover rich information about all the places around you.
